June 07, 2016 — ADM Animal Nutrition, a division of Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM), is revolutionizing the aquaculture market with a new, highly concentrated source of omega-3 fatty acids, DHA Nature.
DHA Natur is a dried algae biomass that is rich in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). This new source of DHA offers the aquaculture industry a sustainable alternative to fish oil obtained from commercially farmed and wild-caught fish. The world’s fish stocks, the current global source of fish oil, are depleted. This depletion, coupled with increased costs and a growing demand for omega-3 supplements, has made the creation of an alternative source of omega-3 fatty acids a critical need for the industry. “ADM Animal Nutrition has reached a significant milestone by bringing a sustainably manufactured microalgae product, DHA Nature, to market,” said Peter Bergstrom, International Managing Director of ADM Animal Nutrition. “There is significant market interest in an alternative source of DHA and we are currently increasing production to meet increasing demand.” DHA Natur is a highly concentrated, non-genetically modified plant-based DHA source. It is obtained through a controlled fermentation process using ADM’s microalgae-based technology which allows heterotrophic algae to be produced more efficiently than phototrophic algae. DHA Natur consists of 17 to 20 percent DHA and is a high-quality flour product that is free from heavy metals and pesticides. DHA Natur is currently approved for use in the European Union and Chile. Regulatory approval in the USA and Canada is planned for the near future.
